Qu’est-ce
qu’un Grand Frère ou une Grande Soeur ?
C’est un mentor, une référence pour un enfant qui
généralement viendra d’une famille monoparentale.
Le « Grand » aide l’enfant à grandir, en offrant
non seulement de l’amitié et des repères mais aussi
en partageant avec son « Petit » des activités de tous
les jours comme aller au cinéma, jouer au basket, aider pour les
devoirs, aller à la pêche ou simplement discuter au téléphone.
Il ne faut pas sous-estimer la valeur d’avoir un adulte qui n’est
pas de la famille qui montre de l’attention et de l’affection
envers un enfant. L’adulte joue ainsi un rôle déterminant
en montrant à l’enfant les valeurs et en lui apprenant à
devenir responsable, tout en ayant du plaisir !
Certains enfants ayant eu des grands « Frères ou Soeurs »
ont fait face à de réelles difficultés dans leur
vies. Le fait d’avoir un mentor qui sait comment surmonter des obstacles
et qui est désireux de partager ses connaissances fait toute la
différence.
Souvent les enfants enrôlés dans le programme sont considérés
« à risque », ie ils ont plus de probabilités
d’avoir des problèmes à l’école ou de
s’engager dans des comportements anti-sociaux tels que violence,
drogue, grossesse durant l’adolescence etc. Un enfant qui subit
des échecs et qui est à la traîne durant les premières
années de son éducation aura de la peine à rattacher
le wagon. Avoir un mentor aide à traiter ces problèmes à
la racine. Les enfants peuvent ainsi recevoir le support et l’attention
dont ils ont besoin afin de faire des choix et de remplir leur potentiel.
91% des enfants impliqués dans le programme ont dit avoir une meilleure
estime d’eux-mêmes ,70% ont eu de meilleurs résultats
à l’école et 73% n’ont pas eu de problème
avec la justice.
L'implication
d'Hervé:
Hervé
va aussi ajouter un élément éducationnel et fera
une présentation aux "paires" le dimanche 15 juin lorsque
le bateau sera ammaré à St George. BBBS a aussi organisé
un concours pour "petits" afin qu'ils aient l'opportunité
de gagner une des trois places pour une sortie à la voile avec
Hervé. BBBS a également contacté Big Brothers de
Rhode Island qui encouragera Hervé au départ de la régate.
Hervé leur fera également une présentation à
son retour.

enthousiasmés par cet événement. Nous le voyons comme
une formidable occasion de célébrer notre 25ème anniversaire.
Nous allons participer également au défilé annuel
de la fête nationale en construisant un char en forme de bateau.
Le timing est idéal car le défilé à lieu 2
jours avant le départ d'Hervé pour Newport".

What
is a Big Brother or a Big Sister ?
A Big Brother or Big Sister acts as a mentor and role model to a child,
generally a child from a single parent home. The 'Big' helps the child
to grow, not just by offering friendship and guidance, but by sharing
things with their 'Little' - everyday things like going to a movie, playing
basketball, helping with homework, going fishing, or simply chatting on
the phone. The value of having an adult who is not a relative show genuine
care, concern and affection, cannot be over-stated. He or she performs
and invaluable role in teaching the child values and responsibility -
as well as how to have fun.
Some of the children matched with Big Brothers or Big Sisters have faced
very real obstacles in their lives. Having a mentor who knows how to work
hard to overcome challenges, and who is willing to share knowledge and
experience, makes a world of difference. The children served are often
considered 'at risk' - likely to under achieve at school, likely to drop
out of school, or engaging in "anti-social" behaviors, like
substance abuse, violence, early pregnancy and crime. A child who experiences
failure and falls behind in the early years of his or her education is
likely to be unable, and too disheartened, to catch up. Mentoring has
been shown to address and ameliorate many of the root causes of such early
failures.
With mentors, young people get the guidance, support and nurturance they
need to make positive choices and fulfill their potential. 91% of children
involved with Big Brothers & Big Sisters Programs experience a sharp
rise in self-esteem, 70% do better in school, and 73% stay out of trouble
with the law.
Hervé's
involvement :
Herve
also wishes to add a teaching component to his efforts and he will make
a presentation to the "matches" on Sunday, June 15th while the
boat is berthed in St. George. BBBS also plans to have a competition for
their Littles to vie for the opportunity to win one of three spots for
an hour-long sail with Hervé. BBBS has even contacted Big Brothers
of Rhode Island who have agreed to cheer Hervé on at the start
of the race and also participate in a presentation by him upon his return.
Patrice Parris, executive director of BBBS says : "We are really
excited about this event and as this year marks our 25th anniversary,
we see it as a wonderful celebratory event. We have even entered the Bermuda
Day Float parade, and as the theme is “The Traditions of Land, Sea,
and Air” we intend to feature a yacht (sea) and Hervé has
agreed to participate. The timing is ideal as he sets off to Newport in
preparation for the race on May 28th."
